Elphinstone 50 Year Celebration

Elphinstone Group Celebrates 50 Years of Innovation and Community

The Elphinstone Group’s 50th anniversary celebrations brought together employees, partners, and community members to honour five decades of innovation, resilience, and contribution to the manufacturing and heavy industries.

The day commenced with an Open Day at the Ormsby Street Yellow Iron manufacturing facility in Burnie, where guests, including managing and executive directors from across the Elphinstone Group, past and present employees and their families, business leaders, and local and state politicians were invited to explore the company’s impressive history and achievements.

Food stalls lined the assembly floor, while displays profiled the eleven companies now operating under the Elphinstone Group banner. A large HD screen showcased Elphinstone’s remarkable journey.

From humble beginnings in the 1950s, to Dale Elphinstone’s apprenticeship with William Adams in 1960 and the manufacture and sale of the first R1500 LHD to Henderson Mine in Colorado. To the many milestones which followed, including the partnership with Caterpillar Elphinstone, the reestablishment of the Elphinstone brand, and the acquisition of companies such as Haulmax, SVS, and Southern Prospect.

The historic machine display was a highlight, featuring the Elphinstone-designed and manufactured AD17 dump truck (1983), the original R1500 (1986) and R2800 (1988) long haul loaders, alongside the latest in underground mining technology. While the event reflected on past accomplishments, it also highlighted future opportunities, showcasing the Cat AD30 dump truck, E15 Delivery with crane, E15 Agitator 7m³, and the E15 Hybrid prototype.

Festivities continued into the evening with a Gala Dinner held at the newly renovated Burnie Arts and Function Centre, beautifully styled by the talented team at Event Avenue. More than 200 guests gathered for an evening of reflection, celebration, and connection. The night began with cocktails and canapés accompanied by the elegant sounds of Tarkine Strings, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

ABC journalist Tania Dendrinos served as an engaging MC, guiding guests through an evening filled with stories, memories, and entertainment.

The event was officially opened by Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff, who acknowledged Elphinstone’s significant contribution to the state’s manufacturing and economic landscape.

Special congratulatory messages from global partner Caterpillar added to the sense of occasion, recognising Elphinstone’s achievements on the international stage. One of the evening’s highlights was a series of “on the couch” conversations led by Tania Dendrinos, featuring long-serving employees, past and present, alongside members of the Elphinstone family. Their personal reflections offered a heartfelt glimpse into the company’s culture, challenges, and triumphs over the past 50 years.

Founder Dale Elphinstone marked the milestone by launching his much-anticipated book, Elphinstone Group: Because We Didn’t Know We Couldn’t. Each guest received a copy, along with a small thank-you gift as a keepsake of the event.

Entertainment continued throughout the night, with The Red Kellys performing an acoustic set during dinner before energising the crowd with a lively finale that had guests dancing into the evening. A photo wall proved to be a popular feature, providing a perfect backdrop for capturing memories of a truly special occasion.
The Elphinstone Group’s 50th Anniversary celebrations were a fitting tribute to the company’s legacy and a celebration of the people, partnerships, and passion that continue to drive its success.
